During his childhood he was over weight with 80kg as his weight. His friends used to tease him because of his weight. After feeling embrassed he thought of losing weight and he joined gym. He used to play at Shivaji stadium in Panipat where he saw some javelin throwers and began participating himself.
He visited the nearby Panipat Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre, there javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary recognised his early talent and observing Chopra’s ability to achieve a 40-metre throw without training and impressed by his drive, Choudhary became his first coach.
After training for one year with Jaiveer Choudhary, he was admitted to the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula. There, he trained under coach Naseem Ahmad, where he was trained for long-distance running along with the javelin throw.
In the National Junior Athletics Championships in Lucknow on 27 October 2012, won gold with a new national record throw of 68.40 metres. Next year, in 2013 he entered his first international competition, the World Youth Championships in Ukraine. He won his first international medal in 2014, a silver at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok.

Neeraj won a gold medal in the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland and set a world junior record of 86.48 m and became the first Indian athlete to achieve a world record and also setting a new national record.
By being impressed with Chopra’s performance at the South Asian Games and his future potential, the Indian Army offered him a direct appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Rajputana Rifles with the rank of Naib Subedar. He was formally inducted as a JCO in December 2016 and from May he received leave to continue his training.
Neeraj Chopra won gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a throw of 87.58m in his second attempt, on 7th August 2021. His coach’s name is Uwe Hohn. He is the first Indian athlete to win the world title in track and field U-20. He has ranked 6th in the 2018 World Continental Cup in Javelin Throw. In the World U-20 Championships 2016, he got first rank. Similarly he has ranked 1st in the Assigned Championships 2017, Asian Games 2018 and Common Wealth Games 2018.
