He did his schooling from Bahai’s School, Gangtok, Sikkim. Later he joined Asutosh College, Kolkata, West Bengal. His father, K. B. Chhetri was an officer in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers of the Indian Army and his mother was Sushila Chhetri.

He is both the most-capped player and all-time top goal scorer for his national team.

Sunil Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002 and moved to JCT where he scored 21 goals in 48 games. From a very young age, Chhetri started taking part in various football tournaments. He signed for Major League Soccer side Kansas City Wizards in 2010 and was the third player to go abroad from the subcontinent.
After returning back, he joined India’s I-League where he played for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan before going back to abroad, at Sporting Clube de Portugal of the Primeira Liga, where he played for the club’s reserve side. India won the 2007, 2009, and 2012 Nehru Cup,as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship and Sunil Chhetri was part of game.
On 30th March 2004, Sunil represented the Indian U-20 team from the first time in the 1-0 victory over the Pakistan U-23 team in the 2004 SAF Games in Pakistan. India defeated Cambodia 6-0 In Chhetri’s first international tournament in 2007 Nehru Cup, India defeated Cambodia 6-0 in which Chhetri scored 2 goals.
During the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, he was also one of India’s best players as he helped India win the tournament, which qualified them to their first AFC Asian Cup scoring twice in the final tournament in 2011. Sunil Chhetri has also been named AIFF Player of the Year a record six times in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018-19.
For the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification which took place in Malaysia, he was named as the national team captain. With 56 goals in 97 appearances, he is also the all-time top goalscorer for the India national team, and also he is the most-capped player.
Other than Arjuna award in 2011, he was also honoured with FPAI Indian Player of the Year in 2009 and 2018, AFC Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player in 2008, SAFF Championship Player of the Tournament in 2011, Hero of the I-League for the 2016-17 season and the Hero of the Indian Super League for the 2017-18 season.
In June 2018,he scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei in their first match of 2018 Intercontinental Cup. However, he was disappointed not to see the audience at the stadium to support team India. Later he uploaded a video on Twitter requesting people to come to Mumbai Football Arena to support the Indian team.
His video became viral and as a result, team India got full support from fans, even celebrities and legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli came to watch his match. The stadium was packed with exuberant crowd for the rest of the matches.
In the second match of the tournament, which was also Chhetri’s 100th international appearance for India and also scored two goals including a goal from penalty spot in a 3-0 victory over Kenya. On 10 June, Sunil score two goals in a 2-0 win over Kenya in the final and won the Intercontinental Cup title and also equalled Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s tally of 64 international goals, became the joint-second active international goal scorer after Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo who had 81 goals.
He finished as the top scorer of the tournament with eight goals. Sunil Chhetri scored against Thailand on 6 January 2019 helped India to get a historic 4-1 win over them in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. On 7 June 2021,he scored two goal in a 2-0 win over Bangladesh in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification
