Top 11 Chinese Apps Banned In India – TikTok Ban, UC Browser, WeChat1. TikTok
Founded by Zhang Yiming in 2012, TikTok is a Beijing-based video-sharing app. Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, users shares short dance, lip-sync, comedy and talent videos on the platform.
TikTok became the first Chinese app to be downloaded most number of times in the US in October 2018. This was possible after it merged with Musical.ly on 2 August 2018.
Kevin Mayer is the CEO of TikTok and COO of parent company ByteDance. As of July 2020, Tik Tok is worth $75 billion.
On 29 June 2020, Indian goverment banned the app along with 58 other Chinese apps. This was done in order to protect the data and privacy and put a stop to stealing of users data outside of India.
2. WeChat
Developed by Chinese company Tencent, WeChat is used for messaging, social media and mobile payment app. This was another app which was banned by the Indian Government.
WeChat has over 1 billion monthly active users, the app is worth well over $500 billion as of mid-May 2020.
The original version of WeChat was created by Allen Zhang and was launched in 2011 as “Weixin”. Later it was re-branded as “WeChat” after it reached 100 million users and released in International market.
WeChat was the most popular messaging app in China and Bhutan in 2016.

3. VMATE
VMate is another app which was banned in India. It is a video sharing platform with thousands of videos shared by users. The Chinese app has Cheng as its CEO. In India, the app has over 5 crores users.
For each download of the app the Chinese company receives $1.
4. SHAREit
Headquartered at Beijing, China, the company was founded in April 2015. It is led by Michael Qiu as its CEO. SHAREit was previously part of Lenovo when it started, but was later made into a separate company.
The application allows smartphone users to share files directly through their devices.
SHAREit has over 100 crores downloads in India.
5. CamScanner
CamScanner is a mobile application which allows iOS and Android devices to be used as image scanners. The Chinese application allowed users to easily scan and share documents through their smartphones.
Owned by Chinese company, Intsig Information Co. Ltd, it is available for free on Google Playstore & App Store
The app was mostly used by teachers and students for easy scanning study materials. In India, it was downloaded by over 10 crore people. It is listed as the 12th most downloaded apps in India.
6. Helo
From the makers of TikTok, Helo is another social application made by Chinese company, ByteDance.
Helo had over 4 crores users in India. Helo allowed users to share videos and could use the video as status similar to WhatsApp.
One could earn money from the app. The application managed to earn over 300 crores from India.
7. Bigo Live
Bigo Live is a live video streaming platform where users could share their live moments with their followers.
Owned by a Singapore-based company called BIGO Technology, it was founded in 2014.
Bigo Live was co founded by David Li and Jason Hu.
In April 2016, it becamed the number one app in Thailand and in March 2020 it ranked 6th in the United States.
It has over 350 million globally and is worth over $2 billion dollars.
8. UC Browser
UC Browser is a web browser developed by UCWeb which is a Chinese mobile internet company. It is a subsidiary of the Alibaba Group.
The app was launched in April 2004. Available in both Android and iOS, UC Browser compressed data for fast loading of websites. It had a cloud system for quick and smooth loading process.
Along with that UC Browser supported downloading of files as well as pages for offline reading.
The app is most popular in India and Indonesia with over 10 crore users in India only.
9. Beauty Plus
Beauty Plus is a photo editor which had over thousands of filters which you could use to enhance your images.
The image editing app was founded by Chinese company Meito.
Over 10 crore users have downloaded the Beauty Plus app in India. This image editor too got banned in India
10. Mobile Legends
Mobile Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) for mobile developed and published by Moonton. The game was released in 2016.
In 14 July 2016, after its released, the game became very popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
In July 2018, it lost a lawsuit for plagiarism of League of Legends and Riot Games was awarded a settlement of $2.9 million.
11. CLASH OF KINGS
Clash of Kings is a mobile massively multiplayer online strategy game. The Chinese game was developed and published in 2014 by Elex Tech. Since its release, the game has been one of the top grossing apps on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play.
The game also had a number of high-profile international celebrity endorsements.
In its first year itself, the game got over 65 million downloads.
Manchester United’s star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger endorsed the game. As well as other celebrities like Korean pop star Hani, Korean actor and actress So Ji-sub and Son Ye-jin, Chinese-American singer Wang Leehom and Japanese actor Yasuke Kubozuka.
