Born to Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, an army officer and Ashima Sharma, a homemaker, in Uttar Pradesh. She has an elder brother, Karnesh Sharma who is a film producer. He had also served in the mechant navy. He also played for the under-19 Bangalore Ranji cricket team. Anushka studied in the Army School and received a degree in arts from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.
After graduation, she moved to Mumbai as she wanted to be a model. She says that she had no aspiration to be an actress but actually wanted to make it big in the modelling career. After enrolling at the Elite Model Management, Anushka made her runway debut at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2007 for Wendell Rodricks’s Les Vamps Show.
Anushka Sharma has done campaigns for Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio. Later she joined an acting school and also began auditioning for film roles. She got a role as an extra in Lage Raho Munna Bhai(2006).

She could not recognize him as he was dressed as Suri and Shah Rukh walked up to her and introduced himself. The film was a huge success and her performance was appreciated. She was signed for a three-film deal with the Yash Raj Films.
