Biography: Born to Ashok and Madhu Chopra in Jamshedpur, Bihar. Her parents were physicians in the Indian Army. She has a younger brother and they used to relocate often due to her parents' occupation. She studied in La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow and St. Maria Goretti College in Bareilly. At the age of 13, she moved to the United States, where her aunt lived, to study. In Massachusetts, she participated in several theatre productions and studied Western classical music, choral singing and Kathak dance. She returned to India after three years and studied at Army Public School, Bareilly.
While still in school, she won the May Queen contest at the Bareilly Club. Her mother then sent her pictures for the Miss India contest while she was preparing for her 12th boards. She then dropped out of Jai Hind College, Mumbai after she became Miss India and went to the Miss World pageant and won that as well.
She soon began receiving film offers and on 2002, she made her screen debut with Thamizhan, a Tamil film. In 2003, she made her Bollywood debut in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. The same year, she appeared in the box-office hit Andaaz.
