Dayahang Rai is an actor, director and play writer, who works in Nepali cinemas. He was born on 13th April 1980 in Khawa, Bhojpur, Nepal.
His father is Tilakram Rai and mother is Chandra Devi Rai. He was from a middle class family. His father had two wives. Dayahang has two sisters younger than him and one elder brother. He completed his Lower Secondary Level study from Pashupati Lower Secondary School in Khawa VDC, Bhojpur district and his High School from Annapurna Secondary School, Dilpa in 1998. He joined Bhojpur Multiple College, taking Geography as his major subject. Later he came to Kathmandu in 2001 and joined Nepal Maananiki Campus ( RR Campus ) taking journalism as a major subject. But he could not do well in studies. As he was interested in cinemas field, so he decided to join theatre and stage shows.

He was inspired by his mother, who used to narrate him numerous fairy tales in his childhood. Dayahang started acting from his schooldays. He started his acting career from television series, Yuva ,Dalan and Hamro Team. His first debut film was Anagarik in 2006. Though he acted in several films but hos films could not gain much success in film industry. Later in 2010, he was shown in Dasdhunga film which became successful. In 2012, his film Loot became super hit and marked turning point in his and marked tunrning point in his career and since then he is giving hit films one after another. Such as Chhadke, Badhshala, Kabaddi and Karkash in 2013, Jholey and Talakjung vs Tulke in 2014, Kabaddi Kabaddi and Woda number 6 in 2015, How Funny and Bir Bikram in 2016, Loot 2 in 2017, Kaanch in 2018 and Jatrai Jatra in 2019.

His film White Sun (Seto Surya) based on the civil war in Nepal, which was Nepal’s submission to the 2018 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category and was also his first film to entry of Nepal for Academy Awards.
He won National Film Awards (Nepal) for Best Supporting Actor for Dasdhunga in 2009, National Film Awards (Nepal) Best actor for Sambodhan in 2015, National Film Awards (Nepal) Best actor for Kabaddi Kabaddi in 2016 and he won LG Award, Best actor for Kabaddi Kabaddi in 2016.
Dayahang Rai married Nepali singer Benuka Rai in 2006. They have a son named Samduhang Rai.
