Gargle your mouth with a quarter teaspoon of salt in some warm water. This helps to relieve a sore throat. The warm water helps to shrink and dry mucous membranes. Do this a least 3 times a day.
Inhale some steam, pour hot water in a bowl and inhale the steam for about 10-15 minutes with a towel over your head. Breathing the steam will help shrink the swollen mucous membranes in your upper respiratory tract and promotes drainage. Try rubbing a mentholated vapor rub on to your chest. It helps to open up the airways and helps congestion.
Research has shown that vitamin C which is a natural antihistamine, helps to encounter congestion, runny nose and watery eyes caused by colds. Experts recommend 500 milligrams of vitamin C to be taken daily. If you cannot get enough from your fruits and vegetable intake try taking a vitamin C supplement.
Increase your fluid intake when you have a cold. Refrain from drinking fruit juices and sweetened sodas as they act as diuretics, that will dehydrate your body. Rather drink water or artificial sweetened soft drinks. Herbal teas are also good as they have different soothing properties that help with your cold.

It has been proven that smokers get more colds than non smokers do. Cut down on smoking when you have a cold. Smoking irritates membranes that are already sensitive due to the cold and will worsen your cold symptoms. Also avoid smoky rooms and keep away from people who smoke.
If your cold has got you feeling achy and tired, it is a good idea to get some rest. Take a few days off and stay in bed. Eat some home made chicken soup. Chicken soup slows down the inflammatory process.
If you have a cold and it is accompanied by a worsening cough or a very high temperature it may be time to see your doctor.
