Five people killed in Serum Institute fire, Pune

At Serum Institute of Pune, India, a fire broke out at an under construction building. The incident took place at around 2:45 pm in the three upper floors of a newly constructed building.

The fire was caused as some insulation material caught fire during welding. The building where the incident took place is adjacent to the plant where “covishield” is being produced. It is located near the Terminal 1 gate.

Due to this incident, five workers were killed. They were doing welding and air-conditioning at the building, which had been completed recently. Among them two were from Uttar Pradesh, one was from Bihar and the rest of the two were local people.

Avinash Saroj, who was one of the worker said that they was doing the work of AC insulation on the fourth floor and they saw smoke inside the building. Until the time they could even react to it, smoke spread quickly and became dense and they couldn’t see anything. They ran away and jumped from the window to save their life. Though he was safe but was badly injured.

According to police and fire brigade officials, the fire was brought under control by 4:30 pm. The fire started on the fourth floor of a building and started spreading to the fifth floor rapidly.

The affected building was a part of the facilities where Serum‘s Covid-19 vaccine making process was going on.
