Charlie Spencer Chaplin born in London in April 1889. It is said that there no official record of his birth. Although, Chaplin believed that he was born in East Street, Walworth in South London. His mother and father had married four years before at which time Charlie Sr (Charlie Chaplin’s father) became the legal carrier of Hannah’s illegitimate son, Sydney John Hill.
At the time of Charlie’s birth, his parents were both music hall entertainer. Hannah, the daughter of a shoemaker, had unsuccessful short period of career under the stage named “Lily Harley” while Charlie Sr was a popular singer.
Charlie Chaplin was in financial distress at the age of 10 as the early death of his father and later due to his mothers illness. He was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of 9. Charlie made his professional debut after he became member of The Eight Lancashire Lads. He had won popular favour as an outstanding tap dancer.
At the age of 12, Charlie got his first chance to appear in a stage show as, Billy, the pageboy in support of William Gillete in Sherlock Holmes. He first appeared in the cinema world in November 1913, when he joined “Mack Sennet” and “The Key Stone” film company. His initial salary was $150 a week. His success in the screen made other producer to start negotiating for his services.
In the year 1915, he joined “Essanay Company” at a larger increase of his income. The following year, Charlie got more demand and shined with the “Mutual Film Corporations” for more money. The films that he appeared were, The Floor Walker, The Fireman, The Vegabond and 1 AM. The greatest production upto the period were, The Count, The Pawnshop, Behind The Screen, The Rink, etc.

After his contract got expired with “Mutual Corportation” in 1917, he decided to become an independent producer and got more freedom and leisure in making his movies. He started his own studio. In 1918, Chaplin made agreement with “First National Exhibitors”. His first film with the organization was, A Dog’s Life. After he produced, The Bond, which the USA Government used to popularised the Liberty Loan drive.
His next commercial film was, Shoulder Arms, released in 1918, which added enormously to Chaplin’s popularity. After, Shoulder Arms, he produced “Sunny Side” and “A Days Leisure” both released in 1919. In the same year in the month of April, he joined with Marg Pickford, Douglas Fairbank and D.W Griffith to establish the United Artist Corporation, B B Hampton, in his history of the movies. It was the distribution company, which gave complete control over his film.
His first feature length was The Kid (1921) followed by A Woman Of Paris (1930) and Modern Times (1936). During 1940s, he was involved into controversy and his popularity declined. He was accused of communist sympathiser. The involvement in paternity suit and marriages to much younger woman caused scandal. An FBI investigation was opened and Chaplin was forced to leave the USA and settled in Switzerland.
Chaplin produced, directed, wrote films and composed the music for most of his films. His financial conditions enabled him to spend years earned development and production of pictures. He was awarded an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to the film industry. The films such as The Gold Rush, Citylights, Modern Times and The Great Dictator are ranked on industry list of the greatest films of all times.
